Teaching Hoot, is a complete lesson plans unit that is based off of Carl Hiaasen’s novel, Hoot. The book champions our youth’s ability to make an impact in our society. The book, and the lesson plans, challenges students to consider how they interact with the world around them, with a strong emphasis on how people treat each other. These Lesson Plans for Hoot, will help students integrate the complex ideas that are discussed in the book, while assisting them in building a stronger vocabulary and critical thinking skills. The standards-based lesson plans has students conduct research and group projects to discover the learn more about the issues contained within the book. Not only will the students be able to develop clear opinions on important issues, but they will also be able to strengthen their writing skills, and environmental awareness. It’s a win-win for both teachers and students, as both are allowed to learn in class from a book that is not outdated in terms of current societal issues, fresh, and engaging, all while meeting standards-based curricula.
